Grasscloth vs. Vinyl Wallpaper: Which Is Right for Your Florida Home?
Two of the most popular wallpaper categories we're asked about are grasscloth and vinyl. They sit at opposite ends of the material spectrum, one natural and artisanal, one engineered and performance-driven. Here's how to choose between them for your South Florida home.
What Is Grasscloth?
Grasscloth is a wallcovering made from natural plant fibres, grasses, jute, seagrass, sisal, or abacá, hand-woven and backed with paper. Each roll is slightly unique, with natural colour variation and texture that gives a room organic warmth that no manufactured product can replicate.
Grasscloth works beautifully in living rooms, dining rooms, primary bedrooms, and studies. It adds texture and a sense of calm luxury. The visible seams are part of the aesthetic, not a flaw.
What Is Vinyl Wallpaper?
Vinyl wallpaper is manufactured with a vinyl coating that makes it highly durable, washable, and moisture-resistant. It comes in an enormous range of patterns, textures, and styles, from minimalist solids to elaborate prints. Type II vinyl is the commercial standard, used in hotels, offices, and high-traffic residential spaces.
Humidity: Florida's Key Factor
This is where Florida's climate changes the conversation. Grasscloth is sensitive to humidity, it can swell, contract, and show seam gaps in rooms with significant moisture exposure. In Florida, this means grasscloth is best suited for interior rooms with climate control: bedrooms, dining rooms, and studies. It's generally not recommended for bathrooms, laundry rooms, or any space with high moisture.
Vinyl wallpaper handles humidity extremely well. It's the preferred choice for bathrooms, kitchens, and any space where moisture is a factor. For Florida homeowners with older homes or variable AC, vinyl provides peace of mind that grasscloth cannot.
Aesthetics
Grasscloth wins for warmth, texture, and organic luxury. It's impossible to replicate with a manufactured product, the natural variation is its signature quality. If the goal is an elevated, serene interior with a timeless feel, grasscloth is often the right choice.
Vinyl has made enormous strides in design quality. Many premium vinyl wallpapers convincingly replicate textures, wovens, and even natural fibre looks, while offering the durability and ease of care that grasscloth cannot match.
The Verdict
Choose grasscloth for interior living spaces where you want organic warmth and texture, and you can control humidity. Bedrooms, dining rooms, libraries, and studies.
Choose vinyl for bathrooms, kitchens, powder rooms, high-traffic hallways, or any space with humidity exposure. Also the right call for rental properties or homes with young children.
In many homes, the answer is both, grasscloth in the bedrooms, vinyl in the wet areas. We're happy to advise on the right material for each space during your consultation.
